Business Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

BBES Sectors Mosaic

The Business, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BBES) programme was created in 2009 as a direct response to the increasing demand for data, tools and guidance from a range of business sectors.

The programme builds on our existing long-term engagement with business through the Proteus Partnership and focuses on providing business with relevant information and guidance on biodiversity to facilitate a transition from policy to performance.

By tapping into the wealth of knowledge and expertise available at UNEP-WCMC, the BBES programme provides tailored information that contextualises biodiversity and ecosystem services to support businesses, industry associations and cross-sectoral initiatives.

Our work assists companies to understand risks and manage impacts, meet internal and external policy commitments and standards, comply with regulation, and maximise sustainable opportunities associated with biodiversity and ecosystem services.

This allows it to be integrated as part of normal business practices by streamlining biodiversity information, making it more accessible and relevant to the business community.

UNEP-WCMC also actively engages in several consultation processes to review and revise standards and certification schemes of different organisations to realize their full potential in promoting conservation across different business sectors.

Developing Standardised Indicators for Reporting and Verification

There is growing awareness of both the impact and dependencies that business operations have on biodiversity and associated ecosystem services. These impacts translate into risks to business in a variety of ways. Where there is a direct or indirect dependence, a loss of biodiversity can increase operational costs and decrease profit margins. UNEP-WCMC is developing guidance and analyses to demystify biodiversity and ecosystem services and allow them to be integrated as part of normal business practices.
