Focal Areas

The programme structure at UNEP-WCMC represents some of the focus areas of our work, including:

  • Species team - Species protection legislation and wildlife trade
  • Protected Areas and the WDPA (World Database on Protected Areas)
  • Marine Assessment - includes Marine Protected Areas
  • Ecosystem assessment - including indicators and harmonisation of reporting
  • Climate change and biodiversity
  • Business and biodiversity
  • Biomass and Food Security - Agriculture
  • Informatics - spatial analysis, web development and data management.

There are also a number of cross-cutting themes which are not reflected in this structure:

  • Capacity-building
  • Support to the five biodiversity-related conventions
  • Ecosystem modelling
  • Biodiversity conservation for specific environments, including e.g. mountain regions, the arctic, drylands
