Land & Livelihoods

Sustainable land management supports the delivery of ecosystem services – including the conservation, sustainable use, access to and benefit sharing from biodiversity – which improve human well-being and contribute to poverty alleviation.

Our team delivers scientific and technical services to:

  • Enhance information and capacity for improved biodiversity conservation and pro-poor ecosystem management
  • Facilitate reciprocal biodiversity-poverty/development mainstreaming
  • Support policy processes and enhance the evidence base for appropriate biodiversity, land and livelihood-related policies
  • Promote individual, professional and institutional capacity, especially in lower capacity regions
  • Identify needs and develop suitable tools and methods for monitoring and assessment including indicators development and piloting.

The Performance Review and Assessment of Implementation System (PRAIS) project supports the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and its Parties in building capacity for effective monitoring and assessment of the progress made in achieving the poverty reduction and environmental sustainability objectives of the Convention and its 10-year Strategic Plan and Framework to enhance the implementation of the Convention (2008-2018).

Piloting the UNCCD Impact Indicators with 11 countries

The UNCCD Secretariat has launched the final report of the UNCCD Impact Indicators Pilot study.

UNEP-WCMC supported the UNCCD Secretariat to pilot the indicators by working with 11 countries. Together we assessed the feasibility of reporting on a diverse set of land- and livelihood-related indicators, including poverty, land cover status, malnutrition and biodiversity.

Global Drylands: A UN system-wide response

Coordinated by UNEP’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and prepared by 18 UN agencies through the UN’s Environment Management Group (EMG), involving over 60 development and environment researchers and practitioners, the report sets out a common vision and agenda for UN agencies to step up their efforts to protect and revitalise dryland, and improve the economic and social well being of drylands communities through a positive development and investment approach.
