Laurens is a Nippon Foundation Doctoral fellow conducting his PhD research at the University of Cambridge and in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP WCMC).
He studied Biology, Geography, Ecology and Conservation at the University of Bonn, Germany, with a focus on spatial patterns of species richness in terrestrial plant biodiversity. Past projects involved the mapping of species using expert’s opinion, as well as species distribution modelling on continental scales.
His PhD research is focusing on “Improving range map methodologies for marine taxa”. He will look into the possibilities to transfer species mapping approaches from the terrestrial to the marine realm, where possibilities to integrate expert knowledge into modelling approaches for data deficient taxa is of particular relevance.
