Lack of reliable and accessible data remains one of the biggest barriers to informed decision making. Even though there have been significant advances in the development of policies to incorporate biodiversity issues in a company’s activities, the absence of this data can be a major hindrance to an organisation’s ability to implement and conform to such policies. Proteus is a partnership between oil and gas, mining and technology companies and the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). Its goal is to make global biodiversity and ecosystem information available and to develop tools to support businesses in making better informed decisions. Ongoing compilation of data and development of new tools in the context of this partnership helps share expertise to build products which address real-world needs.

The objectives of Proteus are:

1.  To improve significantly the accuracy, completeness and currency of information available in the World Database on Protected Areas
2.  To provide integrated access to information on sites important for biodiversity identified by a wide range of internationally active; and
3.  To increase access to up-to-date information on the distribution and status of coastal and marine ecosystems
